Intensive Outpatient Program

What is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

A structured, evidence-based treatment for individuals facing substance use challenges, mental health concerns, and/or emotional regulation issues.

While the specifics of each intensive outpatient program (IOP) differ, our IOP provides a highly structured treatment program that addresses substance use disorder issues and relapse prevention for individuals who do not require medical detoxification or 24-hour supervision.

Individuals participating in our IOP are able to maintain responsibilities at home, school, or work since they can return home or to a sober living environment at the end of each day.

Our IOP offers the same therapeutic approaches as other levels of care—such as individual and group counseling, behavioral therapies, psychoeducation, case management, and Family support—while allowing you to maintain your daily life.

Treatment Comparison

IOP vs. Inpatient Treatment

Understanding the differences helps you choose the right path for your recovery journey.

Intensive Outpatient Program

  • Living Situation: Live at home or in a sober living environment
  • Time Commitment: 9+ hours per week, typically 3-hour sessions, 3 days per week
  • Daily Life: Continue work, school, and family responsibilities
  • Cost: Typically lower cost than inpatient treatment
  • Duration: Often longer program length (weeks to months)
  • Best For: Individuals with stable home environments and mild to moderate substance use disorders

Inpatient Treatment

  • Living Situation: Live at the treatment facility 24/7
  • Time Commitment: Full-time, 24-hour care and supervision
  • Daily Life: Temporarily step away from outside responsibilities
  • Cost: Higher cost due to 24/7 care and accommodations
  • Duration: Typically shorter program length (days to weeks)
  • Best For: Individuals with severe substance use disorders, medical complications, or unstable living environments

Research indicates: There are no significant differences in treatment outcomes between those who complete an inpatient program and those who finish an IOP. The best treatment option depends on your specific needs and circumstances.

To find the appropriate level of care, consult with our addiction treatment specialists to collaborate on a personalized treatment plan.
